Royal Caribbean is known for pushing the boundaries of what a cruise ship can offer.

Its newest ships can feature waterparks, surf simulators, zip lines, rock climbing, skating, multiple pools, Broadway-style entertainment, specialty restaurants, nightlife, and neighborhoods designed around different types of experiences.

The result is a cruise where the ship can be just as much of a destination as the ports you visit.

That is one of the biggest differences between Royal Caribbean and more destination-focused cruise lines such as Princess or Holland America.

A Royal Caribbean cruise is energetic, active, and full of choices.

There is usually something happening throughout the day, whether that's a pool activity, live performance, sports activity, trivia, a show, or one of the ship's signature attractions.

The experience can be as busy or relaxed as you want it to be, but the biggest ships are designed for travelers who enjoy having a lot of options.

With so many restaurants, entertainment venues, pools, activities, and public spaces, exploring the ship can become part of the vacation itself.

Royal Caribbean is one of the cruise lines I would recommend when the ship is a major part of what you want from the vacation.

If you're someone who wants to wake up and have ten different things you could do before lunch, Royal Caribbean is hard to beat.

It's also one of my favorite options for multigenerational travel because different members of the same family can have completely different vacations on the same ship. Kids can head to their activities, adults can relax by the pool or visit the spa, and everyone can come together for dinner or a show.

The biggest mistake I see travelers make is choosing Royal Caribbean based only on the cruise line name. The ship matters. Royal Caribbean's fleet spans a wide range of experiences, and the newest ships can feel dramatically different from the older ones.

Choose Royal Caribbean if: You want a large, energetic ship with an enormous variety of activities, entertainment, dining, and experiences.

Consider another line if: You want a quieter, smaller, more traditional, or more luxurious cruise where the destinations and personalized service take center stage.

Choosing the right Royal Caribbean ship can be just as important as choosing the itinerary.
